What We Believe | Article IV: Satan & The Fall of Humanity | Pastor Jonathan Evans | Scripture: Genesis 1:2

Here’s a 5-day Bible study you can walk through personally or with a group.  It’s themed around your meeting topic: “Satan and the Fall of Humanity”

Each day includes: Theme, Passages, Focus Teaching, Reflection Questions, and a Prayer Prompt.

Day 1 – The Holy Creator and the Broken Beginning

Theme: God’s perfection vs. the “tohu wabohu” (formless and void) world

Read:

Focus:
God is holy, orderly, good, and intentional.  Humanity is made in His image, crowned with glory and honor to reflect His rule on the earth.  Before we talk about Satan and the fall, we must see how good and beautiful God’s design originally was.

Reflect:

  1. What words or phrases in Genesis 1 show you God’s goodness and order?
  2. According to Genesis 1:26–28 and Psalm 8, how does God describe humanity’s role and value?
  3. Where do you see “good” design in your own life that you may be taking for granted?

Prayer Prompt:
Thank God for His goodness in creation and for making you in His image. Ask Him to renew your awe at His design and your identity as His image-bearer.

Day 2 – The Fall of Satan: From Showroom Glory to Ruin

Theme: Pride and the original rebellion

Read:

Focus:
Scripture portrays a brilliant, exalted being who fell through pride.  Tradition identifies this figure as Lucifer/Satan, who wanted to be like the Most High instead of giving glory to Him. Pride is the Luciferian root that still infects human hearts.

Reflect:

  1. List the “I will” statements in Isaiah 14:13–14.  How do they mirror modern pride?
  2. Where are you most tempted to say in your heart, “I will…I deserve…I’m in control”?
  3. How does Proverbs 16:18 warn you about the real cost of pride?

Prayer Prompt:
Confess any areas of pride the Holy Spirit shows you. Ask God for a humble, teachable heart and to keep you from a “Luciferian complex.”

Day 3 – The Fall of Humanity: The Attack on God’s Word

Theme: How Satan deceives and how humans fall

Read:

Focus:
In Eden, the serpent attacks God’s Word, God’s character, and God’s boundaries:

  • “Did God really say…?” – sowing doubt
  • “You will not surely die” – denying consequences
  • “You will be like God” – promising godlike autonomy

The same enemy later tempts Jesus, but Jesus answers with truthful, submitted use of Scripture and perfect trust in the Father.

Reflect:

  1. How does the serpent twist God’s Word in Genesis 3?  How do you see similar twists today?
  2. Compare Eve’s response to temptation with Jesus’ response in Matthew 4. What key differences do you see?
  3. Where are you tempted to:
    • doubt God’s Word,
    • deny consequences, or
    • “be your own god”?

Prayer Prompt:
Ask God to sharpen your discernment against lies and to deepen your love for His Word so that you respond to temptation the way Jesus did.

Day 4 – The Ongoing Battle: Two Seeds, One Story

Theme: The “seed of the woman” vs. the “seed of the serpent”

Read:

Focus:
Genesis 3:15 introduces a war of seeds: the offspring of the serpent vs. the offspring of the woman.  This points forward to Jesus, the ultimate “seed of the woman,” and to the long story of spiritual conflict. In Christ, we are called not to fear demons but to stand firm in God’s armor.

Reflect:

  1. What hope do you see in Genesis 3:15, even in the middle of judgment?
  2. According to Romans 5, how do Adam and Christ differ in what they bring into the world?
  3. Which piece of the “armor of God” in Ephesians 6 do you most need to strengthen right now?

Prayer Prompt:
Pray through each piece of the armor of God (Eph. 6:10–18), asking the Lord to equip you to stand firm against the enemy’s schemes in your everyday life.

Day 5 – Christ’s Victory and Our Humble Response

Theme: Satan defeated, salvation offered, humility required

Read:

Focus:
At the cross, Jesus disarmed the powers and authorities, triumphing over them.  Satan is defeated; his final doom is certain.  But salvation belongs only to those who humbly repent and receive Christ, not those who cling to a “Luciferian” self-sufficiency.

Reflect:

  1. How do Colossians 2:13–15 and 1 John 3:8 describe what Jesus did to the devil’s works?
  2. What does James 4:6–10 teach about the posture God responds to—pride or humility?
  3. Are there specific sins, habits, or attitudes you need to repent of today and bring under Christ’s lordship?

Prayer Prompt:
Thank Jesus for His victory over sin, death, and Satan.  Humbly confess your need for Him as Savior and Lord. Ask Him to help you live as someone transferred from the kingdom of darkness into His kingdom of light.
