Here is a 5-day Bible study built around Pastor Jonathan’s sermon on the Godhead / Trinity (Article 2: The Godhead).  Each day includes: passages to read, key teaching, guided observations, and application.

Day 1 – One God, No Other

Primary Passages:

“Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!” (Deut. 6:4)

Study Aim

To ground yourself in the oneness of God and see why “one God” is the starting point for understanding the Trinity.

Read & Observe

  1. Read Deuteronomy 6:4–9 slowly.

    • What 3 main commands do you see after the declaration that “the Lord is one” (vv. 5–9)?
    • Who is responsible to pass this truth on?

  2. Read Deuteronomy 4:35, 39.

    • What repeated idea do you see about God?
    • How strong is the language (e.g., “there is no other”)?

Connect to the Sermon

  • Pastor Jonathan emphasized: truth is monodic—one, indivisible.
  • If God is one, truth is one; “my truth” vs. “your truth” is a sign we’ve erected other gods (feelings, politics, trauma, culture).

Discussion / Reflection Questions

  • Where do you see our culture treating truth as multiple and personal instead of single and absolute?
  • Is there a part of your life where you’re tempted to let something else (opinion, pain, politics) have more authority than God’s Word?

Response

Write one sentence that begins:

“Because the Lord is one, I will submit this area of my life to Him: ______.”

Day 2 – The Trinity Revealed in Creation

Primary Passages:

  • Genesis 1:1–3, 26–27
  • John 1:1–3, 14
  • Job 33:4

“Then God said… Then God said… Then God said… Then God said… Then God said… Then God said… Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image…’” (Genesis 1)

Study Aim

To see one God working through Father, Son, and Spirit in creation.

Read & Observe

  • Read Genesis 1:1–3, 26–27.

    • Who is present in v. 2?
    • What shift happens in v. 26 (“Let us… in our image”)?

  • Read John 1:1–3, 14.

    • What titles or descriptions does John give to Jesus (the Word)?
    • What did the Word do “in the beginning”?

  • Read Job 33:4.

    • How is the Spirit described here?

Connect to the Sermon

  • Pastor Jonathan:
    • Father – the source
    • Son – the agent/accomplisher
    • Spirit – the sustainer/overseer
  • “God said… God said… God said…” points to one speaker, yet “Let us make man,” and the presence of the Spirit show diversity within unity.

Discussion / Reflection Questions

  • How does it affect your view of God to see Father, Son, and Spirit all active in creation?
  • How does it affect your view of yourself to know you were made in the image of this Triune God?

Response

Write a brief personal statement of praise beginning:

“Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I praise You as my Creator because…”

Day 3 – The Trinity in the Work of Redemption

Primary Passages:

  • Psalm 110:1
  • John 3:16
  • 1 Peter 2:24
  • Ephesians 1:13–14
  • Optional: Romans 8:1

Study Aim

To understand how the same three persons active in creation are also active in salvation.

Read & Observe

  • Read Psalm 110:1.

    • Who is speaking to whom?
    • What does this suggest about more than one “person” being called Lord?

  • Read John 3:16.

    • Who is sending?  Who is being sent? For what purpose?

  • Read 1 Peter 2:24.

    • What exactly did Jesus do?
    • What are the two results for us (“die to…” and “live to…”)?

  • Read Ephesians 1:13–14.

    • What two steps happen before being sealed by the Spirit (v. 13)?
    • What does the Spirit guarantee (v. 14)?

Connect to the Sermon

  • Pastor Jonathan:
    • Father – plans, initiates, loves, sends.
    • Son – accomplishes redemption on the cross.
    • Spirit – seals, indwells, guarantees, sustains.
  • The Trinity’s unity in salvation means your security rests in God’s work, not your performance.

Discussion / Reflection Questions

  • When you sin or fail, do you think more about your grip on God or His grip on you?
  • What does being “sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise” practically mean for how you face guilt, fear, or doubt?

Response

Write a short prayer of trust:

“Father, thank You for planning my salvation. Jesus, thank You for accomplishing it. Holy Spirit, thank You for sealing me. Today I choose to rest in…”

Day 4 – Image-Bearers: Person, Marriage, and Family

Primary Passages:

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:23
  • Genesis 2:18–24
  • Ephesians 5:25–27, 31–32

Study Aim

To see how our design (as individuals and in relationships) reflects the Godhead.

Read & Observe

  • Read 1 Thessalonians 5:23.

    • What three parts of the human person are named?
    • What does Paul want to happen to each part?

  • Read Genesis 2:18–24.

  • Read Ephesians 5:25–27, 31–32.

    • How is Christ’s relationship to the church used as a picture of marriage?
    • What does Paul call this union in v. 32 (“mystery”)?

Connect to the Sermon

  • Pastor Jonathan:
    • We are one person with Spirit, soul, and body—a reflection (not an equal) of our Triune God.
    • Marriage is not just two, but three: husband, wife, and God as the “emulsifier.”
    • Family (husband, wife, children) also reflects unified diversity.

Discussion / Reflection Questions

  • In your own life, do you pay attention to all three dimensions—Spirit, soul, and body—under Christ, or do you ignore one?
  • If you’re married (or hope to be), what would it look like very practically for God to be the binding center of that relationship, not just an add-on?

Response

Choose one relationship (marriage, family, close friendship, or church) and write:

“Lord, in my relationship with ______, please be the One who binds us together. Show me how to reflect Your unity by…”

Day 5 – Unity as a Picture of the Godhead

Primary Passages:

  • John 17:20–23
  • Ephesians 4:1–6
  • 1 Peter 3:7

Study Aim

To apply the doctrine of the Godhead to Christian unity in home and church.

Read & Observe

  • Read John 17:20–23.

    • What does Jesus ask the Father to do for future believers (v. 21)?
    • What is the purpose of this unity (“so that…”)?

  • Read Ephesians 4:1–6.

    • What attitudes protect unity (vv. 2–3)?
    • List every “one” in vv.  4–6 (one body, one Spirit, etc.)   What picture does that paint?

  • Read 1 Peter 3:7.

    • What warning is given to husbands?
    • How does relational disunity affect spiritual life (prayers)?

Connect to the Sermon

  • Pastor Jonathan:
    • An isolated or divided Christian life is unlike the God who has always existed as one in community.
    • The enemy seeks to divide—homes, churches, denominations—because he knows God is perfectly united.
    • The most powerful witness in a divided world is a united church.

Discussion / Reflection Questions

  • Where do you see division (home, friendships, church, race/class/politics) that grieves the heart of a God who is perfectly one?
  • What specific step can you take this week to pursue unity: repentance, listening, forgiving, serving, or refusing to be discipled more by politics than by Scripture?

Response

Write one concrete action step:

“Because my God is one and operates in perfect unity, this week I will pursue unity by…”
